(4-5 Players)

Courtly love, Mystery, Miracles and Adventure lie deep within the heart of the music of the troubadours. From the son of a poor knight, Berenguier de Palou became one of the earliest Catalan Troubadours...our programme begins with his Tant m'abelis and journeys from here to the courts of France, Spain and England with some foot-stamping Dances and Estampie's on the way. We meet many characters on the way, including the Troubadour Jaufre Rudel, who flourished in the mid-twelfth century. He is known in particular for his poems to his distant love. He took part in the second crusade in 1147 and it has been suggested that the distant love was the Countess of Tripoli or even, metaphorically, Jerusalem itself. As a pilgrim, he set out to see her but was taken ill on the ship, to die in the arms of his Countess, once he had reached Tripoli. At his death she took the veil and was never seen in public again.
The last of the Troubadours was Guiraut Riquier. He left a legacy of 48 poems with their music and ended his life in the service of Alfonso X of Castile
